Why we exist

There is no shortage of people willing to sell you a day on this coast. There is a shortage of people willing to tell you what that day will actually be like.

Placid Tours was built around the second thing. We run island days, reef time, fishing, sailing, safari and private crossings to the Tanzanian islands — and we describe all of them the way we would describe them to a friend who was coming to stay.

That means no guaranteed wildlife sightings. No departure times invented before we know your date. No fees that appear on the morning. If a trip is not right for you, we would rather say so and keep you as someone who trusts us.

How we work

Six things that do not change

These are operating rules, not values on a wall. Every one of them shows up somewhere on this website in how a trip is described.

Local knowledge
Our guides, skippers and drivers are from this coast. The value of that is not a marketing line — it is knowing which channel the dolphins are working this week, which reef is worth the extra twenty minutes, and which day is not worth going out on at all.
Coastal expertise
Tides, sea state and season shape everything here. A sandbank exists for three hours. A crossing depends on the swell. We plan around what the water is actually doing on your date, and we tell you what we are planning around.
Hospitality
Swahili hospitality is not a theme we decorate a brochure with. It is lunch eaten properly, in shade, with time to sit afterwards. It is a crew who notice when someone is nervous in the water.
Safety first, and out loud
Safety equipment, briefings and crews who are allowed to say no. If a skipper or dive guide calls off a day, that decision stands — and we would rather move your trip than take your money for something we should not run.
Responsible tourism
Marine parks exist because the reef needed them. Boats keep their distance from wildlife, nobody stands on coral, and reef-safe sun cream is asked for rather than suggested. A reef that survives is the reason there is anything to show the next visitor.
Memorable, not oversold
We do not guarantee dolphins, sable antelope, lions or whales. We take you to where they are, with people who know how to look, and we are honest about the odds. The days people remember here are the ones nobody scripted.

Where we operate

Our work runs along the Kenya Coast and inland from it: the south coast islands of Wasini and Funzi, the reefs off Shimoni, Shimba Hills behind the coast, and Tsavo East further inland.

South of the border we run private speedboat crossings to Zanzibar and Pemba Island. Those are international crossings, and we treat the paperwork as seriously as the boat.
