Mangroves, sandbanks and river mouth
South Coast · Kwale County
Funzi lies in a shallow bay south of Mombasa, separated from the mainland by mangrove channels fed by the Ramisi River. It is a different landscape from the open reef coast: greener, quieter, and shaped by the tide more than by the swell.
At low water, banks of clean sand appear offshore and then disappear again as the tide turns. Boats anchor off them for swimming and for lunch. Because the sandbank only exists for part of the tidal cycle, the day's timing follows the tide rather than the clock — we confirm your departure time once the date is fixed.
The channels behind the island are the other half of the trip. Mangrove forest here supports a lot of bird life, and the estuary is home to crocodiles, which are usually watched from the boat where the river widens.
Nothing on this coast can be guaranteed — wildlife is wild, and tides and weather move. What we can promise is a boat, a crew who know these channels, and a day built around what the water is actually doing.
