Kenya’s coastal city and the gateway to every trip we run — an island of coral-rag streets, dhow harbours and warm Indian Ocean water.
Mombasa sits on an island in a natural harbour, joined to the mainland by causeway, bridge and the Likoni ferry. It is the starting point for almost everything on this site: the road south towards Shimoni and Wasini, the road inland towards Tsavo, and the water route across the channel towards Pemba and Zanzibar.
A city worth a day of its own
Old Town is the oldest part of the island — narrow lanes, carved doors, balconied houses and small cafés. Fort Jesus, built by the Portuguese in the 1590s and fought over for centuries afterwards, stands at the harbour entrance and is the city's best single introduction to how much traffic this coastline has seen.
North and south of the island the shoreline opens into long reef-protected beaches. The reef sits offshore along most of this coast, which is what keeps the lagoon water calm and makes the swimming and snorkelling so forgiving.
Using Mombasa as a base
Most of our guests stay along the north or south coast and travel out for the day. Pickups are arranged directly with you before travel, so tell us where you are staying when you book and we will confirm the arrangement in writing.
