Pemba lies north of Unguja and sees a fraction of the traffic. It is hillier and greener than its neighbour, and clove cultivation has shaped both the landscape and the island's history.
The Pemba Channel between the island and the mainland is deep, and it has a long-standing reputation among divers and among sport fishermen for exactly that reason. Reef walls drop away quickly and the water is clear.
Pemba is not a resort island. Villages, farms and forest cover most of it. Travellers who choose Pemba over Zanzibar are usually choosing quiet, diving and a slower pace.
We run private speedboat transfers to Pemba from the Kenya Coast. Dolphins are seen in these waters, and humpback whales pass through the channel during their migration season — but neither is guaranteed, and no operator can honestly promise you a sighting.
