Wasini or Funzi? A straight comparison of the two island days that leave Kenya’s south coast, and how to choose between them.
Most visitors staying on the Kenya Coast have room for one island day. Two trips dominate the choice, and they are genuinely different experiences rather than two versions of the same thing.
This guide is here to help you pick the right one rather than to sell you both.
Wasini: reef, dolphins and open water
Wasini Island sits off the far south coast near Shimoni. The day is built around water: the channel where dolphins are regularly seen, and the coral reefs of the Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Protected Area further out.
Choose Wasini if you want:
- Snorkelling over living coral. Not sand, not rubble — actual reef, in warm shallow water.
- A realistic chance of dolphins. Not a guarantee, but this channel is where they are.
- A car-free island to walk around. The coral garden boardwalk and the village are worth the time.
- The Shimoni caves. A serious, sobering piece of this coastline's history, usually available at the end of the day.
The trade-off is that it is a longer run south and more time on open water.
Funzi: mangroves, sandbank and the estuary
Funzi Island is quieter and closer. It sits in a shallow bay where the Ramisi River meets the sea, and the day happens in mangrove channels rather than on open reef.
Choose Funzi if you want:
- A tidal sandbank. Clean sand in the middle of the bay, exposed for part of the tide and then gone.
- Birdlife. The mangroves and mudflats hold a lot of it.
- Crocodiles. Watched from the boat where the river widens.
- Calm water. The channels are flat. If open ocean does not appeal, this is your trip.
The trade-off: no coral reef, and the day is scheduled around the tide rather than the clock.
The honest comparison
Here is the short version:
- Snorkelling and dolphins → Wasini.
- Calm water, birds and a sandbank → Funzi.
- Prone to seasickness → Funzi.
- Only one day and want the "classic" → Wasini.
- Been to Wasini before → Funzi. It is not a lesser version; it is a different coast.
Things worth knowing before either trip
Fees are separate. Marine park entry is set by Kenya Wildlife Service and changes. Ask for the current figure for your date — do not trust a number you read on a website, including this one.
Nothing is guaranteed. Dolphins are wild. So are crocodiles and birds. Any operator promising you a sighting is telling you what you want to hear.
Timings follow the sea. Tide and sea state set departure times on this coast, not a timetable. We confirm yours in writing once your date is fixed.
Bring more sun protection than you think. There is no shade on a boat or a sandbank.
